CHAPTER 4

Kenda moved through the next week in a fog of confusion. She thought about Logan all the time. How much she had enjoyed talking to him, the way his fingers gracefully held his knife and fork at lunch, the casual way he draped himself over whatever piece of furniture he was sitting on, and the way she smiled while they talked. She tried to tell herself that he was busy, and that there must have been a good reason for him to ignore her texts. She knew he was receiving them, he just wasn’t replying.

Back at work at Sunvale, Kenda kept her head down and focused on her patients. Her supervisor had noticed her hard work and flexibility around the clinic and had been giving her more tasks. One day, she cornered Kenda unexpectedly.

“Kenda, I’m glad I caught you! You’ve been filling up your timesheet with a fever, and I love to see you applying yourself to life at Sunvale.” Kenda smiled nervously, hoping that Maddie wouldn’t ask her any questions she didn’t want to answer. “So, your time as a Graduate Nurse is coming to an end, and I need to get some things together for your final review,” She flipped to a blank page on her clipboard, “do you have the name of anyone on the surgical team who could give you a reference?”

Kenda paused for half a second before blurting out, “Logan Ashcroft.” Maddie raised her eyebrows in surprise. Kenda smiled; clearly Maddie recognized his name; that was a good sign. “Okay, well, I need you to get his permission for us to contact him to talk about you, it can be over the phone or he can write a reference, whichever is easiest for him.” Kenda nodded, suddenly regretting her hasty exclamation. That meant that she would have to call him.

On her way home from work, Kenda decided she would call Logan and ask for that reference. She needed it badly, and hopefully he could see through whatever insult she had inadvertently given him and write her a solid reference. As she walked from the bus stop, she picked up her cell phone and dialed his number. When Logan picked up on the second ring, Kenda’s heart almost stopped.

“H-hi, Logan. It’s been a little while since we talked…” Logan was silent on the other end of the line, so Kenda just kept on talking. “I’ve been wondering how you’re doing, and how your shoulder is feeling.” That wasn’t untrue, he had been on her mind a lot lately. She missed talking to him, but she wasn’t going to say that. Not now. “I was hoping that I could ask a favor,” she paused and took a deep breath, “my Graduate Nurse period is winding down, and I need a reference to go with my exam scores. My supervisor wanted a reference from someone on the Sunvale surgical team, and I was wondering if you…” Logan’s derisive snort made her voice catch in her throat.

“Why would you ask me? You must have forgotten.
